Details of William's Family

William was born to John VARLEY, a farmer in the hills of Marshall County, (West) Virginia, the oldest of four children.  He married Drusilla HOLLINGSHEAD of Pennsylvania at the age of 21.  William and Drusilla lived in (West) Virginia and farmed with his father.

During the Civil War, William volunteered and served as a 2nd Lieutenant. His cavalry unit rode the railroad beds to protect them from Confederate raiders.

The same year the Civil War ended, William's father died.  The Home Farmlands were left to William and brother, John..  Having heard that the farmlands of Texas were plentiful and rich, the two brothers moved their families to Grayson County, TX around 1876.  William continued to farm the rich soil of North Texas until his death in 1900.
