[NI0083] Perhaps Silas had been too busy running the cotton gin to get married earlier in life. In 1903 at age 43, he married Mattie, and proceeded to have three children. Silas was 47 when Clarence was born!

C-1870-WV

[NI0124] Big Grave creek and its tributaries water the Clay district. The land is very rough; hills rise to considerable altitute. The soil is very fertile for the most part. The Round Bottom, once the property of General George Washington, is very fine land. The scenery is beautiful, being well diversified with hills and valleys. John and James Riggs settled here in 1790. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad passes through Clay up in the narrow valley of Grave creek. The only station is Rosbey's Rock, named for an early settler. Three stores, post office, blacksmith shop, one shoe shop and one grist and saw mill comprises the business of the place. Started in about 1852. (History of the Pan-Handle, written in 1879. LIB-01211998)

[NI0124] Arch L. Sowder wrote an article for the Grayson County History collection. His recollection is that William came by wagon train from West Virginia to Texas in the 1870's, and settled 5 miles northeast of Collinsville. He donated the land for the McComb (Macomb) Methodist Church, cemetery and school. The Varley family owned and operated the first cotton gin in that area. The cotton gin had a steam engine that was fired with wood. The cotton seed which sold for $3.00 a ton was loaded on box cars at the railroad station. O1997-1.

[NI0124] Hazel M. Dvorak recorded a history of Martha Blanche Beatty in another article, also written for the Grayson County History. She writes that her son Fletch as a very young man, "worked for the Varley family in their cotton gin and hay bailing, earning top wages of $15 per month & board. He said the gin was first powered by oxen. It was filled by basket loads and tramped down. Home-made soap was used to lubricate the wooden screws that raised and lowered the press." O-1997-4.

[NI0159] Ann Powell's letter of Feb 13, 1997, sent to me by Lometa Stagg answers some questions regarding the mystery of Ona. (O-06251997)

[NI0159] The Tragic Story of Ona: ....Capt John's son John W. Varley, born in 1866 in W. Va., finished his growing-up years in Grayson Co., TX, where he encountered a Noland girl named Ona, ten years his junior, & married her ca. 1894-95 before he 'went off to war' -- the Spanish-Amer. War, in which he died on 2/18/1896, leaving no children. Now this John W. Varley had a younger brother Will (Wm. D.) Varley the same age as Ona (actually, she was a little over 2 mos. older than Will), and the young widow & sister-in-law turned around & married him! Then she died in Jan. of 1903, per her Macomb[*] tombstone (but I didn't know it was in a house fire!), childless. She is buried at MaComb Cemetery beside her first husband John W. Varley. Will Varley went on to marry a woman named Vera and is buried elsewhere, presumably beside Vera. In fact, the only children of Capt. John buried with him and their mother at MaComb cem. are the 2 sons who died in the Sp.-Amer. War, John W. & Earl C. -- and Ona! (Ona's sister or cousin Anna Bell Noland married Capt John's son Chas. Wesley Varley...."

Edith was a warm and loving person. COR-11271997.
